Hydrophobic textile fibres, e.g. polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose ester or ether fibres (including cellulose triacetate fibres) are dyed or printed with an a -hydroxy-anthraquinone having a single anthraquinone nucleus which contains in at least one b -position an alkoxy group of low molecular weight or a phenoxy group. Specified alkoxy groups are methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy and cyclohexoxy groups. The alkoxy or phenoxy groups may carry simple substituents such as halogen atoms or hydroxy groups. One, two, p three or four a -hydroxy groups may be present. Aqueous dispersions of the dyestuff, preferably in the presence of a dispersing agent such as soap, sulphite cellulose waste liquor or the sodium salt of N-benzyl-m -heptadecyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid, are employed. For dyeing polyester fibres the dyebath preferably also contains a swelling agent such as benzoic or salicylic acid, o-, or p-hydroxy diphenyl, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, trichlorobenzene, phenylmethyl-carbinol or diphenyl. A slightly acid bath is preferably employed when dyeing under pressure. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - methoxyanthraquinone is prepared by alkylating 1 : 2-dihydroxyanthraquinone with dimethyl-sulphate. 1-Hydroxy-2 : 7 - dimethoxy - and 1 : 5 - dihydroxy - 2 : 3 : 6 : 7 - tetramethoxy - anthraquinone can be obtained in an analogous manner. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - butoxy - anthraquinone is obtained by reacting 1 : 2-dihydroxy-anthraquinone with p-toluene-sulphonic acid butyl ester in the presence of sodium carbonate. 1 : 4 - Dihydroxy - 2 - phenoxyanthraquinone is prepared by heating 1 : 4-dihydroxy-2-bromoanthraquinone with phenol in the presence of sodium carbonate. 1 : 4-Dihydroxy - 2 - (p - methylphenoxy) - and 1 : 4 - dihydroxy - 2 - cyclohexyloxy - anthraquinone are obtained in an analogous manner.
