The unit (1) comprises a transport body (10) with a rotary portion (12), used to support and move the objects being transported, and a drive mechanism for the rotary portion. The drive mechanism comprises a rotary drive body (40) having a rotation axis oriented in a different direction to a rotation axis for the rotary portion. Rotary torque is transmitted from the drive body to the rotary portion via a pair of cooperating bevel gears (23, 43), one of which is located on the drive body. The transport body contains a cavity for locating the other bevel gear and this cavity is provided in an internal surface of the rotary portion. Independent claims are also included for the following: Roller conveyor unit for transporting e.g. boxes, comprising a transport body with a rotary portion, used to support and move the objects being transported, polyurethane being provided on at least a portion of the external surface of the rotary portion; #Cassette for use in a conveyor for transporting e.g. boxes, comprising more than one of either of the above roller conveyor units; and #Conveyor apparatus for transporting e.g. boxes comprising more than one of either of these cassettes.
