The system has a high pressure accumulator (20) increasing or creating brake pressure independent of action of a driver on a brake pedal (2). A mechanical energy recovery system (28) connects the brake pedal and the accumulator to recover energy normally dissipated during decreasing the brake pressure with releasing of the brake pedal. Two brake elements (5.1, 5.2) e.g. motorized brake elements, have electrical units to create, increase or decrease the brake torque of a pair of wheels at which the brake elements are associated independent of action on the pedal irrespective of vehicle speed. An independent claim is also included for a method for utilizing a braking system.
