PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the longevity of a developing means by securely switching between the developing state and non-developing state of each color developing means according to each print mode in an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a slit plate which rotates in synchronization with and in the same period as a cam used for switching between the developing state and non-developing state, and includes slits in a cam position where the developing means of all image forming units are in the non-developing state and in a cam position where each image forming unit is switched to the developing state corresponding to each print mode; and a detecting means for detecting one of the slits in the slit plate. A development switch drive means is driven to the cam position corresponding to each print mode, thereby switching the developing means of each image forming unit between the developing state and non-developing state.
