The system (2) has induction loops (11) and radio frequency identification-receiving antennas that are arranged in an area of a roadway-side strip for measuring of electrical and/or magnetic fields, where the loops have the length of 50 meters. A detection unit (14) has an evaluation unit (13) that is provided for detecting a presence of a vehicle based on detection data of the induction loops and the receiving antennas. An output interface (17) transmits occupancy data (BD) representing an occupancy status of the side strip to a traffic control system. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a traffic control system comprising a display and connected with a detection system (2) a method for determining an occupancy status of a roadway-side strip (3) a traffic control method for blocking or releasing a side strip based on an occupancy status.
