<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relay carrying device equipped with a simple structure capable of easily taking out paper when carrying failure occurs on the paper, and an image forming system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The relay carrying device comprises: a vertical aligning means 123 aligning paper in a paper carrying direction; a lateral aligning means 122 aligning the paper in the orthogonal direction to the paper carrying direction; a paper storage portion 12 arrange on an upstream side of the vertical aligning means, storing a plurality of the carried paper, and moving so as to reverse the front side and the back side of the paper and carry that to the vertical aligning means; a paper storage portion driving means M3 moving the paper storage portion; a lateral aligning driving means driving the lateral aligning means; and a control means controlling the action of the paper storage portion driving means and the lateral aligning driving means. When the carrying failure of paper occurs, the control means actuates at least one of the paper storage portion driving means or the lateral aligning means, thereby controlling at least either one of the paper storage portion or the lateral aligning means to move to a retracting position.
