PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly determine and evaluate a display of an eddy current of a crack in an object to be tested comprising a conductive material. SOLUTION: An alternate electromagnetic field has a preset fixed or variable frequency, and affects the object to be tested. A plurality of the eddy currents are induced by the object to be tested, and detected along a plurality of parallel measurement tracks preset in a surficial zone of the object to be tested. When a plurality of the eddy current signals are prepared and preprocessed, each eddy current signal is allocated to one measurement track. The measurement quantity is preprocessed and prepared as a function of the measurement track, the frequency and a position along the measurement track, and arithmetically processed. The crack is evaluated based on a procedure for preparing a plurality of combined crack signals in which amplitudes and/or the track positions are corrected with regard to a plurality of the preprocessed measurement quantities.
