PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the operating condition of an engine by determining a type of fuel without causing knocking. SOLUTION: An ECU 50 specifies a density of fuel supplied to the engine 10 from output of a density meter 61, determines whether the type of fuel is high-octane gasoline or regular gasoline based on the density of the specified fuel, and performs ignition timing control in response to the type of the determined fuel.
