<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid deterioration of combustion noise and emission due to combustion by pilot injection. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A control for an internal combustion engine for controlling fuel injection is provided with a fuel injection means injecting fuel into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine with the injection divided into main injection and the pilot injection in advance of the main injection, a detection means detecting actual ignition timing based on a combustion state in the cylinder, a means determining fuel injection timing of the main injection based on the actual ignition timing, a means computing a heat release amount based on the pilot injection, and a correction means correcting a fuel injection amount by the pilot injection based on the computed heat release amount.
