<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which includes a write-once function and which is free of the problem of tampering. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 4 wherein a soft magnetic backing layer 41; an intermediate layer 42; a recording layer 43 and a protective layer 44 are layered, in this order, on a magnetic disk substrate 40; an assist layer 45 made of a magnetic material is provided between the soft magnetic backing layer 41 and the intermediate layer 42; and the direction of magnetization in the perpendicular direction of the assist layer 45 is previously unified in the same direction and coercive force of the assist layer 45 is set higher than that of the recording layer 43. Only when a magnetic field in the same direction as the direction of the magnetization of the assist layer 45 is applied to perform writing of data, is the data recorded in the recording layer 43.
