<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescence endoscope apparatus to/from which an excitation light unit is attachable and detachable, in which safety is sufficiently taken into consideration, and which is excellent in handleability, and the excitation light unit. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The fluorescence endoscope apparatus 100 includes an illumination light unit 150 which emits illumination light L1 and the excitation light unit 130 which is freely detachably connected with the illumination light unit 150 and emits excitation light L2. When the excitation light unit 130 is connected to the illumination light unit 150, connection detection signals are output from a connection detection unit 162 provided to an optical connector 161 and a connection detection unit 166 provided to a connector 165. When connection signals are not output from the connection detection unit 162 or the connection detection unit 166 since the excitation light unit 130 is not connected to the illumination light unit 150, a switch 134 provided between the drive circuit 132 of the excitation light unit 130 and a semiconductor laser 131 maintains an open state.
