The apparatus and method for automatic loop-off during speaker phone communication senses the communication status and interrupts the speaker phone function at the end of the communication. The automatic loop-off apparatus, which sends the detection signal to the microprocessor when silence is continuous for more than the specified time, includes number keys for dialing, a key input unit(10) which includes a speaker phone key and special keys to accomplish desired functions, a microprocessor(20) to control the overall dynamics of the telephone and generate the control signal that turns the telephone loop and the speaker circuit on and off, a telephone communication circuit(30) which forms the telephone loop for communication with the other end of the line, a speaker phone circuit(40) which makes up the speaker phone loop, a microphone(50), a speaker(60), and a communication status detection unit(70).
