PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which suppresses occurrence of so-called edge shade and non-uniform amount of light emitted to a document. SOLUTION: A color copying machine 1 has an illuminating section 347a which irradiates a document G with light. The illuminating section 347a includes: a plurality of LEDs 501 disposed at predetermined intervals in a main scanning direction Y; an elliptic diffusing plate 507 disposed between the plurality of LEDs 501 and the document G and used to diffuse light emitted by the LEDs 501; and a second reflecting mirror 541B for reflecting light to irradiate the document G, the light being part of light diffused by the elliptic diffusing plate 507 and being not directly emitted to the document G.
