<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict rise of internal pressure of an auxiliary container in emergency where temperature of an auxiliary heater has excessively risen. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An external combustion engine is provided with a main container 10 in which working medium 11 is sealed flowable in a liquid phase state, a heater 14 to heat part of the working medium in the liquid phase state in the main container to be vaporized, a cooler 20 to cool vapor of the working medium heated by the heater to be vaporized, and an output part 22 to convert displacement of the liquid part of the working medium generated by volume change of vapor into mechanical energy to be outputted. The engine is further provided with the auxiliary container 30, communicated with the main container through a restriction means 31, in which liquid 33 is enclosed, the auxiliary heater 35 to heat the liquid in the auxiliary container to be vaporized, a storage container 40, communicated with the auxiliary container, in which the liquid is stored, and a liquid draining means 43 to drain the liquid in the auxiliary container into the storage container.
