<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing variation in surface potential of a drum due to ozone absorption, thereby effectively preventing image defects. Ž<P>SOLUTION: After initial toner installation and a refreshing step are finished, the surface potential Vd of the photoreceptor drum 14 is measured by a surface potential sensor 45. A control part 90 calculates the surface potential variation ΔVd in a prescribed area by using the measured surface potential Vd, and determines whether or not the variation ΔVd is less than a prescribed value (25V in this case), then, when the variation ΔVd is equal to or more than the prescribed value, a paper-to-paper interval during a continuous printing operation is made longer than a reference paper-to-paper interval. The surface potential Vd of the photoreceptor drum 14 is continuously measured, and when the surface potential variation ΔVd becomes less than the prescribed value, the reference paper-to-paper interval is set.
