<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact chuck device which is used for gripping the work piece of a friction welding machine and whose overall length in the chuck shaft direction is shortened. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A guide ring is provided which has a pressing face arranged in a ring shape in the outward radial direction of a claw for pressing the claw inwardly to the inner side in the radial direction, and is rotatably disposed in the peripheral direction of a body. The pressing face is provided with an inclination part for enlarging the movement in the inward radial direction of the claw accompanied by the rotation of the guide ring, and the work piece is gripped by the claw moving in the radial direction by the rotation of the guide ring.
