PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for obtaining a polyarylene with a desired molecular weight. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method for obtaining the polyarylene with the desired molecular weight by subjecting an aromatic dihalide compound to coupling polymerization in the presence of a transition metal complex is characterized by comprising adding at least one compound selected from water and compounds having a carboxyl group, a hydroxyl group or an amino group, as a polymerization controlling agent before initiation of the coupling polymerization to thereby obtain the relationship between the molecular weight of the resulting polyarylene and the amount of a polymerization controlling agent in advance, and adding a polymerization controlling agent with an amount for obtaining the polyarylene with the desired molecular weight based on the relationship.
