PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning device capable of accurately correcting the direction of an article into a predetermined direction, and a positioning method. SOLUTION: The positioning device is provided with: a first belt 127L and a second belt 127R holding a container 1; a first motor for rotationally driving the first belt 127L; a second motor for rotationally driving the second belt 127R; a position detecting sensor for detecting the arrival of the container 1 into a set position; a rotational phase detecting sensor 160 detecting that the circumferential rotating phase of the container 1 that has reached a rotating position is a set phase; and a control device for rotationally driving the first motor and the second motor so that the first belt 127L and the second belt 127R move at constant speed and in mutually reverse directions when the container 1 reaches the rotating position.
