<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber surely preventing the entrainment of gas into a reservoir when discharging liquid from a cylinder into the reservoir. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The hydraulic shock absorber D1 includes the cylinder 1, a piston 2 slidably inserted into the cylinder 1 for partitioning the cylinder 1 into a rod-side chamber R1 arranged on the upper side and an anti-rod-side chamber R2 arranged on the lower side, a rod 3 movably inserted into the cylinder 1 and connected to the piton 2, an outer cylinder 4 arranged on the outer side of the cylinder 1 to form the reservoir R between the cylinder 1 and itself, and a rod guide 6 suitable for the opening ends of the cylinder 1 and the outer cylinder 4 to close the opening ends while journaling the rod 3. Herein, an issue solving means is provided including a vent passage 7 formed in the rod guide 6 to communicate the rod-side chamber R1 with the reservoir R and having a plurality of bent portions for reducing the flow rate of liquid passing therethrough, and an orifice 5 provided on the midway of the vent passage 7.
