PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal surface-treatment agent which does not contain chromium, and can impart excellent corrosion resistance, alkaline resistance, blackening resistance, and fingerprint resistance to a metal material, and a metal surface-treatment method. SOLUTION: The surface treatment method for a metal material comprises applying a metal surface-treatment agent containing a water-soluble compound (A) having an alkoxysilyl group, an aromatic ring, a hydroxyl group directly bonded to the aromatic ring, and at least one amino group selected from a group consisting of a primary amino group, a secondary amino group, a ternary amino group, and a quaternary amino group, and a compound (B) containing at least one kind of metal selected from the group consisting of vanadium, zirconium, titanium. molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cerium, magnesium, aluminum, calcium, cobalt, nickel, zinc, strontium, and lithium, and having 1/100 to 1/1 in the solid mass ratio [(B)/(A)] of the metal in the compound (B) with respect to the compound (A) on a surface of the metal material, then drying the coating by heating the coating in such a manner that the temperature of the metal surface-treatment agent attains 50 to 250°C without water washing to form a coated film.
