<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing clathrate compounds from the melt of the constituents thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The present invention relates a method for producing clathrate compounds, comprising producing a homogeneous melt containing the desired elements in the desired ratio, and subsequently solidifying the melt to obtain the clathrate compound by quickly cooling the same. A preferable matrix or cage component(s) is one or more elements selected from Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Al, Ga, In and transition elements, and a preferable clathrating component(s) is one or more elements selected from alkali metals, alkaline-earth metals and transition metals including lanthanoids and actinoids, and, more preferably, one or more elements selected from alkaline-earth elements, lanthanoids, and ocationally, actinoids.
