PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine that naturally enables performing normal sewing work, and that enables skipping a stitch during the sewing work, and furthermore, that enables causing an engaging pawl and an engaging portion of a needle bar to be accurately engaged and disengaged when skipping the stitch during the sewing work. SOLUTION: An operating member return spring is provided between an operating member and a frame. The operating member return spring and the operation member are configured such that, in the process of supplying power to a solenoid and driving the engaging pawl from an engaging position to a withdrawn position by the operation member, spring force is not, or only weakly exerted on the operating member between the engaging position and the vicinity of a point where the engaging pawl is to be disengaged, and the spring force is relatively strongly exerted on the operating member between the vicinity of the departing point and the withdrawn position, so that large resilient force is stored in the operating member return spring with the movement of the operating member.
