<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram reproducing device and a hologram reproducing method, obtaining a reproducing signal of high quality and reducing in size and thickness of the device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Incident light L1 of p-polarized light is caused to enter a hologram record medium 6, and transmitted light L2 at this time is reversed to generate reproducing reference light L3. The polarized light of the reproducing reference light 3 is converted to s-polarized light by a quarter-wave plate 10, so that reproducing signal light L4 generated from a hologram 9 also becomes s-polarized light. A sheet polarizer 15 separates reflected light of p-polarized light obtained by reflecting the incident light L1 by the hologram record medium 6 from the reproducing signal light L4 of s-polarized light. As a result, SN ratio of a reproducing signal can be improved. Further, the sheet polarizer 15 can be disposed just before a light-receiving surface 16a of an image pickup element 16, so that the hologram reproducing device 100 can be reduced in size and thickness.
