The invention relates to a method for cleaning a filter unit for the production of a clean liquid such as drinking water, and particularly to the cleaning of a filter unit used therein. The method comprises the different steps of: - substantially stopping the flow of liquid through the filter unit with a membrane unit therein - allowing a membrane unit to relax in the substantially motionless liquid; and - flushing the membrane unit in order to discharge fouling particles released from the membrane unit.
