PURPOSE: A multimedia system for vehicle having an add-on function and a control method thereof are provided to manufacture a provided module in a card type or a chip type, thereby reducing the volume and weight of the multimedia system. CONSTITUTION: A multimedia system for vehicle having an add-on function comprises a main body(100) and a plurality of function modules(200). An interface unit(110) connects interface with the function modules. A display unit(120) displays menu items on a screen. The function module comprises a module interface unit(210) and a module processing unit(220). The module interface unit interfaces a control signal and multimedia data transmitted and received from a function controller(140). The module processing unit receives the control signal from the module interface unit to perform operation corresponding to the control signal.
