PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality image that does not give roughness sensation, has high dot reproducibility, and has high granularity. SOLUTION: In this developing method, a developer carrier having a magnet inside is arranged opposite to an image carrier, the surface of the developer carrier is made to carry two-component developer containing toner and magnetic carrier in a layer form, and a latent image formed on the surface of the image carrier is developed by the toner. The developer carrier is formed, by roughening the surface and then forming a plurality of grooves extending in the axial direction. While one point of an image carrier is brought into contact with two-component developer and separates from it, an image obtained by integrating the developer density coming into contact with the surface of the image carrier is two-dimensionally FFT-analyzed, the difference between the maximum value and minimum value of the integrated value in 5-12 cycle/mm of power spectrum obtalined in the two-dimensional FFT analysis is set 0.1 or smaller in the upper and lower limit 15 mg/cm<SP>2</SP>, with respect to the standard pumping amount of the developer.
