<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard disk management device capable of easily setting/releasing write protect for prohibiting write of a data into a hard disk used as a removable disk medium, and capable of safely managing the data recorded in the hard disk. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This hard disk management device is recognized as an ATA removable disk by a personal computer 20, when starting up the personal computer 20. Switching of the setting/releasing of the write protect is not notified immediately even when a write protect switch 6 is operated when an OS locks a medium, but the switching of the setting/releasing of the write protect is notified after waiting the release of the lock. The hard disk management device is thereby prevented from generating the situation where the write protect is set in the midway of writing the data into the hard disk 3 of the medium so as to suspend the data write under execution in the midway thereof, and the data write is properly carried out into the hard disk 3.
