<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for reducing medium noise in a high density recording system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic support and a magnetic layer on the non-magnetic support, and is used in a system having an MR head as a reproduction head. The magnetic layer includes magnetic powders and a binder, and has a depth of 10 to 200 nm. An autocorrelation length Ma of the magnetic layer in the longitudinal direction is equal to or less than 70 nm and an autocorrelation length Mb of the magnetic layer in the width direction is equal to or less than 80 nm while a ratio (Ma/Mb) of the autocorrelation length Ma of the magnetic layer in the longitudinal direction to the autocorrelation length Mb of the magnetic layer in the width direction is 0.80 to 1.20.
