<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device capable of operating properly a braking mechanism without accompanying an increase of a load in a normal-directionally and reverse-directionally rotatable motor, so as to carry out a usual fixing operation and a pressure contact-and-separation operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The usual fixing operation of the fixing device 9 is executed by a normal rotational driving of the drive motor 50. A driving force of the drive motor 50 is thereby transmitted to a heating roller 92 side, when the drive motor 50 is rotated normal-directionally, a press contact state between a heating roller 92 and a pressing roller 93 is maintained by a switching means 40, and a one-side helical gear 51D is moved toward a direction coming off from the braking mechanism 60. The helical gear 51D is engaged with the braking mechanism 60, when the drive motor 50 is stationary or rotated reverse-directionally, and the driving force is transmitted to a switching means 40 side, to bring a separated state of the pressing roller 93 from the heating roller 92.
