A method of limiting or preventing fluid flow through a portion of a subterranean formation is provided. The method comprises the steps of: (a) forming a treatment fluid comprising: (i) a water-swellable, water-insoluble elastomer in the form of discrete particles, wherein the particles of the water-swellable, water-insoluble elastomer have a characteristic of being capable of sticking together to form an agglomeration when exposed to water; and (ii) a carrier fluid for the water-swellable, water-insoluble elastomer; and (b) injecting the treatment fluid through a well into the subterranean formation to deposit the discrete particles of the water-swellable, water-insoluble elastomer in the subterranean formation.
