The two reciprocating pumps (1a,1b) are each driven by thrust rods connected to drive cylinders (4a,4b) connected to a control valve system. The control valves ensure that the preliminary pressure of the one pump is similar to the output pressure of the other pump which is delivering fluid. This reduces the down time of each pump in each cycle. The control valves ensure a smooth change over between the two pumps. The valve action is controlled by sensors which monitor the movement of the thrust rods.
