<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption in an image reader connected to a network. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reader includes: an image reading section 30 for reading an image on a document to generate image data; a communication section 20 for establishing communication with an external device to transmit image data acquired by the image reading section 30 to the external device; and a central control section 10 and a power control section 51 for controlling power supply from a power supply section 50 that supplies power, to the communication section 20. When the communication with the external device is not established at the communication section 20, or after image data are transmitted when the communication with the external device is established at the communication means, the central control section 10 and the power control section 51 stop power supply to the communication section 20.
