<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small, high-zoom-ratio zoom lens having high optical performance and a large field angle at the wide-angle end, and an image pickup apparatus including the zoom lens. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This zoom lens includes a first lens group having a positive refractive power, a second lens group having a negative refractive power, a third lens group having a positive refractive power, a fourth lens group having a negative refractive power, and a fifth lens group having a positive refractive power. The first to fifth lens groups are arranged in order from the object side to the image side. All of the lens groups are moved during zooming from the wide-angle end to the telephoto end such that the distance between the first lens group and the second lens group is increased and the distance between the third lens group and the fifth lens group is increased.
