PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably keep a belt at a balanced position even when the belt is misaligned due to a secular change or the like. SOLUTION: The fixing device has a meandering correction mode to set the attitude of a roller 26 at a meandering correction position so that the belt 27 stretched between a plurality of rollers 24 and 26 may be returned within a prescribed region in the width direction when the belt 27 moves to a position beyond the prescribed region in the width direction, and a balance maintaining mode to set the attitude of the roller 26 at the balanced position so that the belt 27 returned within the prescribed region may be kept within the prescribed region. The initial position of the roller 26 required to keep the belt 27 within the prescribed region is measured at the start of the initial operation of the belt 27, and the measured position is set as the reference balanced position of the roller 26, and also, the balance maintaining time to keep the belt 27 within the prescribed region is measured, and when the measured current balance maintaining time is shorter than the predetermined time, the initial position of the roller 26 is measured again.
