PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which prevents image disturbance by suppressing occurrence of friction between the distal end of the transfer material and an image carrier, when carrying out margin-free printing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus constituted so that a transfer material P is conveyed to a transfer area, after coming into contact with an intermediate transfer belt 2, is provided with an optical sensor 30 for detecting contact between the tip of the transfer material P and the intermediate transfer belt 2; entry of the tip of the transfer material P to the transfer area, wherein when the tip of the transfer material P comes into contact with the intermediate transfer belt 2, the conveying speed of the transfer material P is made lower than the moving speed of the intermediate transfer belt 2 by a predetermined speed; and thereafter, the conveying speed of the transfer material P is increased to make it equal to the moving speed of the intermediate transfer belt 2.
