<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely identify and recognize characters similar each other, when recognizing the characters from a pattern image including a character image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This pattern recognition device has a dictionary learning part 23, a filter mask learning part 24, a partial area feature value calculating part 26, a pattern recognition part 28 and a feature vector generating part 29. The respective leaning parts 23, 24 integrate updated amounts of a filter mask and a dictionary vector, based on recognition results by matching in the pattern recognition part 28, and update the filter mask of a mask storage part 25 and the dictionary vector of a dictionary vector storage part 21, respectively, when learning is finished.
