The method involves providing information about a load moment of loads (22) e.g. generator (222), driven by a drive unit (10), where the load moment of the loads is indicated for preset nominal speed of the drive unit. A correction value for the load moment is determined depending on power consumption of the loads and information about momentary speed of the drive unit. The drive unit is controlled depending on actuating variables, which are formed with a precontrol value depending on the correction value. The actuating variables are formed with a regulating variable or a control variable. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a motor control device for operating a motor in a drive unit of a vehicle (2) a computer program for executing a method for operating a drive unit.
