An ion generating element, comprises:
a positive ion discharger (12) for generating positive ions; and
a negative ion discharger (13) for generating negative ions, the ion dischargers arranged separately from and independently of each other with a distance securing insulation therebetween, characterised in that at least one of the dischargers includes a discharging portion (12j, 13j) for causing electric discharge, and a conducting portion (12k, 13k) having a voltage same as the discharging portion, and surrounding a perimeter or part of the discharging portion. With such an arrangement positive ions are inhibited from reaching the discharge portion of the negative ion discharger, and vice versa.
