<p>In a process to manufacture e.g. an automotive exhaust silencer incorporating butt-welded (7) sheet metal components (2, 3), the first component (2) has a slit at the outer margin (8) in the vicinity of the weld seam. The slit begins at the edge (5) and describes an arc (12) of at least 180 degrees. The curved slit is directed away from the weld seam and follows a path of up to 360 degrees. Parts of the slit may also incorporate straight sections. Also claimed is a commensurate welded sheet metal assembly e.g. automotive exhaust system.</p> |
