In an internal combustion engine, the engine is formed so that an output of an electric motor (27) can be superposed on an output of the engine. The vehicle drive power from the engine and the vehicle drive power from the electric motor (27) are adjusted so that the SO X trap rate of the SO X trap catalyst (13) is maintained at a predetermined high SO X trap rate.
