PURPOSE: A projection-type display device and a method of controlling the same are provided to adjust the brightness of an outputted image based on an APL(Average Picture Level) of an inputted image and the screen gain information obtained from the image projected onto a real screen. CONSTITUTION: A test image output unit(20) outputs a test image having a specific pattern, and an image output unit(30) projects the test image outputted from the test image output image onto a screen. An image photographing unit(40) photographs a test image projected on the screen. A image data processing unit(50) obtains the APL for each frame of the image signal inputted from the outside. A control unit(70) obtains the gain information of the screen, and outputs a brightness variable signal based on the gain information of the screen and the APL.
