An energy harnessing apparatus (1) comprising first and second containers (2a, 2b) connected together by connecting means (17), the first container (2a) having first outlet means (5a) for draining matter from the first container (2a) and the second container (2b) having second outlet means for draining matter from the second container (2b); fill means (24) for filling the first and second containers (2a, 2b) and harnessing means (36) for harnessing energy from movement of the first and second containers (2a, 2b), wherein the fill means (24) fills the first container (2a) with matter and the second outlet means (5a) drains the second container (2b) of matter therein, thereby causing the first container (2a) to move and causing the harnessing means (36) to harness the energy from the movement of the first container (2a), the fill means (24) subsequently fills the second container (2b) with matter and the first outlet means (5a) drains the first container (2a) of matter therein, thereby causing the second container (2b) to move resulting in the harnessing means (36) harnessing energy from the movement of the second container.
