A bearing (26) allows the cam carriers (3, 4) to be turned. It can be slid along the cam shaft (2) relative to the engine casing, together with the cam carriers. Screw drives (19) shift the cam carriers (3, 4) and bearing (26). A sleeve- or roller bearing (26) is specified. The bearing is located in a space equal to its (26) width, between opposite end faces of the cam carriers. The cam carriers include one or more cam profiles (5, 6). The cams (and/or their profiles) in a group, differ. The bearing can be locked in positions corresponding with the center-to-center spacing of cams or their profiles.
