The method involves interposing a coupling device (42) between an electric machine (40) e.g. motor, and a motor shaft (48) coupled to rear wheels (34, 36), where the device has a control input (Ec) set in a coupling position to ensure coupling between the machine and shaft or in a decoupling position to interrupt the coupling. Value of speed (Vt) of the vehicle is provided by a speed sensor (64). The device is controlled by a CPU (60) for decoupling the machine from the shaft when the value is greater than a speed reference threshold established from characteristic parameters of vehicle body. An independent claim is also included for a control device for implementing a method of controlling a hybrid vehicle.
