Provided is a method for producing a plant cell or plant with increased ascorbate, the method comprising transformation of a plant cell or plant with a polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide with a specified amino acid sequence, or a variant of the polypeptide, wherein the variant has the activity of a GDP-LGalactose Guanyltransferase. Further provided are methods of producing ascorbate with transgenic plants comprising the sequence, methods of identifying herbicides using the polypeptides and antibodies raised against the polypeptide.
