A positioning apparatus for a freely flying kitelike element on which wind acts, having a wing profile 101 as the exclusive propulsion system, as an auxiliary propulsion system or as an emergency propulsion system, which is connected via a hawser 1.1 to a watercraft 4, characterized in that a winch having a drive mechanism is provided which has means which result in the hawser 1.1 being pulled in if a first predetermined pulling force is undershot and/or in the hawser 1.1 being paid out if a second predetermined pulling force is exceeded and/or a predetermined incident-flow speed is exceeded.
