Disclosed are recombinant adenoviruses that are designed to avoid pre-existing immunities in the host, but which are still capable of inducing strong immune responses against the proteins encoded by the nucleic acids which they carry. In particular, the adenoviruses are based on Ad5, characterised in that the adenoviruses comprise a chimeric hexon protein wherein the seven hypervariable regions HVR1 to HVR7 are replaced with HVR sequences disclosed herein.
