Disclosed is a layered composition for catalyzing production alkenyl alkanoates, comprising an inner core, and an outer layer comprising a refractory inorganic oxide, a fibrous component, an inorganic binder; and palladium, gold, rhodium, or combinations thereof as catalytic components dispersed on the outer layer. Also disclosed is a method of producing alkenyl alkanoates comprising contact a feed of an alkene, an alkanoic acid, and an oxygen containing gas to the composition.
