PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a compound from being diffused from a mask layer by preventing the compound with halogen or the like from being formed through the use of a stable substance to reactive plasma for a mask layer, to prevent influence of the signal interference between adjacent patterns owing to excellent magnetic recording pattern separation performance, and to improve deterioration in magnetic recording and reproduction characteristics with time even in use under a high-temperature and high-humidity environment. SOLUTION: In a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium having the magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern, a magnetic body region 3 is formed on a non-magnetic substrate 1, the mask layer, which is made of at least one material selected from a group of Pt, Ru, Pd, is formed on the magnetic body region 3, and then a place not covered with the mask layer on the surface of the magnetic body region 3 is exposed to the reactive plasma, and the recording layer of the place is amorphized to modify magnetic characteristics, thus forming the magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern.
