<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether what has occurred is a paper jam or a paper shortage, by using an existing component without using a dedicated detection means. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A pickup roller 16 for sending out paper P stored in a paper cassette 11 is driven by a PF motor 61. A printer control part determines that there is no paper when a driving current value exceeds a threshold value, by monitoring the driving current value of the pickup roller 16, while rotationally driving the PF motor 61 by a rotation quantity corresponding value corresponding to a distance L until the paper tip reaches a separation means 21, after starting paper feeding. When there is the paper, and when a paper detection sensor 64 does not detect the passing of the paper tip even when driving the pickup roller 16 by a predetermined quantity, it is determined as the paper jam.
